Valdez Silver Salmon Derby Started July 28th
The silver salmon derby kicked off Saturday and the weigh-in station was busy late Saturday night. Kevin Duyn of Fallon, NV weighed in the largest Fish Saturday to take the daily 1st place prize. Duyn’s 13.06 pound silver currently leading the overall standings. Harvey Thompson of Big Sandy, MT took 2nd place daily Saturday and is currently in 2nd place overall. Bill Comer, local resident of Valdez is in 3rd place in the overall standings with his 12.22 pound silver.
While the halibut derby boasts weekly prizes for the largest halibut caught, the silver salmon derby awards daily 1st and 2nd places prizes for the biggest salmon caught during the day.
The 3rd Annual Valdez Women’s Silver Salmon Derby will take place on Saturday, August 11th. The opening ceremony will take place in the civic center on August 10th from 7 to 9pm, will include dessert. The silver salmon sisterhood awards ceremony will be on August 11th at the civic center from 7 to 9pm. the pipeline club will be selling barbecue plates.
Registering for the Women’s Silver Salmon Derby costs $25 and gets you: FREE Admission to the Opening and Closing Ceremonies; chances to win prizes for the TOP TWENTY largest fish caught and commemorative a Women’s Derby Dog Tag. Women’s Derby participants MUST purchases a Valdez Fish Derbies Silver Salmon Derby ticket in addition to women’s derby registration. Valdez waters have been anything but quite with a 340 pound halibut being brought into Port. Jim Adams of North Pole, AK hooked himself a monster sized fish, July 28th, aboard the Otter Dodger. His fish measures 90.5 inches in length and snags him 1st place in for Weekly Winners in Week 9 in the Valdez Halibut Derby.
Adams’s fish knocks Tiffany Williams off the leader board and Rob Rachow down to 2nd place in the overall standings with his 328 pound halibut. Bonnie Woods is holding tightly onto 3rd place with her 274.5 pound flat fish she reeled in back in June.
