Week Four in the Halibut Derby Fish Weight in at 160 lbs Plus

Tiffany Williams of Slana, remains in the top spot in the Valdez Halibut Derby with her catch of a 266 pound halibut she reeled in June 20th aboard the No Excuses. Williams has also captured the first place weekly prize for week four in the halibut derby.

Local Valdez resident Pete Mattison, reeled in a 165.9 pounder June 21st aboard the No Excuses bumping John Conant off the leader board and taking 2nd place in the overall standings. Mattison also hooked himself the second place weekly prize in the halibut derby.

Hanging onto 3rd place is Donald Pearson of South Dakota who just last week was leading the halibut derby. Pearson hooked his 162.7 pound flat fish aboard the Faithful May 27th. At the end of Week 4 in the derby overall leading fish have broken the 160 pound mark.

The Valdez Silver Salmon Derby is slated to begin July 28th and run through September 2nd at noon. The first Big Prize Friday is August 3rd and the person catching the largest silver salmon on that day will win an inflatable raft in addition to the daily prizes.

The Valdez Fish Derbies truck is now on display by the Highway turnoff for Eagles Rest RV Park. Each ticket purchased for the Halibut or Silver Salmon Derbies is an entry to win the Valdez Fish Derbies truck. A Season ticket for either species gives the purchaser five entries for the drawing to be held at the Spawn ‘til Dawn Party Labor Day weekend. Anglers should keep their derby tickets as entry to the popular awards party is free with a derby ticket.

The weigh-in station for the Valdez Fish Derbies is open 3pm to 9pm. Derby tickets for both the salmon and halibut derbies are $10 each and are good for one day of fishing in the derby. A season ticket for either species is $50.
