Valdez Fish Derbies Ending This Sunday- Big Fish May Still Be Caught

VALDEZ – The Silver Salmon and Halibut Derbies end this Sunday at noon, so there are still a few days left to reel in a big one. According to Brian Marston of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, silver angling has been excellent is Prince William Sound waters and are abundant in as far as Mineral Creek. Marston also reports that halibut will begin to move into deeper habitats as the temperatures cool and summer comes to an end. For those late-season anglers looking for some halibut it is suggested to fish towards Montague Island.

This coming Friday is Big Prize Friday and the 1st place silver salmon daily winner will take home a Zodiac Inflatable Raft worth over $1250 in addition to the daily prizes. This is the last Big Prize Friday of the derby.

The Spawn’ til Dawn Derby Awards party is this Sunday night at 7pm at the Valdez Civic Center. Admission is free with your derby ticket or $5 at the door. This event marks the end of the Valdez Fish Derbies. The evening will feature: presentation of winner checks; Fish Olympics; door prizes; BIG money prizes; and the Seekins Ford truck drawing.

Leading the halibut derby is Jim Adams with his 340 pound halibut he reeled in aboard the Otter Dodger on July 28. Coming in 2nd is Rob Rachow of Hager City, WI with his 328 pound flat fish he hooked back on July 17 aboard the Harvester and in 3rd place is Bonnie Woods of Valdez with her 274.5 pounder she reeled in June 25 aboard No Excuses.

Sitting in the top spot for the silver salmon derby is Janice Joseph with her 19.12 pound silver she caught August 15th. In 2nd place is Sonya Simon of Tok, AK with a 18.32 pound silver salmon she caught August 11th and holding onto 3rd place is Lolita Collins of Sparks, NV with her 18.16 pounder she reeled in August 15th.
