New Leaders in Valdez Silver Salmon Derby Weigh In at 17 Plus Pounds

VALDEZ – Sonya Simon of Tok, Alaska weighed in a 18.32 pound silver Saturday becoming Queen of the Silver Salmon Sisterhood. Along with winning 1st place in the Women’s Derby Simon’s fish was large enough to land her 1st place in the overall standings in the Valdez Silver Salmon Derby. Last year’s winner weighed 18.42 pounds only a .10 pound difference from Simon’s. Sitting in 2nd in the overall standings in the silver salmon derby is Carrie Cramer of Wasilla who reeled in a 17.56 pounder. Cramer not only stands 2nd place in the regular derby but also netted 2nd place in the Women’s Silver Salmon Derby. Bumped down to 3rd place is Susan DeMuth of Merritt Island, FL with her 17.00 pound salmon she caught aboard Swifty’s II.

Some of the Top Women’s Derby participants reported to have caught their large sized silvers on the Alyeska Marine Terminal side of the bay. Anglers are starting to see more silvers at Allison Point and the shores were lined with young children and adults picking up a pink with nearly every cast. According to Brian Marston of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, “Pink salmon are still being caught in Port Valdez, but have slowed down.”
                       
In the Halibut Derby, the overall standings remained the same with Jim Adams leading the way with his mammoth 340.0 pound flatfish. Big halibut continue to come in to Port Valdez. The first place weekly winner in the Halibut Derby was John Hood of Valdez, Alaska with a 228.8 pounder he caught aboard the No Excuses and a 209.6 pounder caught aboard the Dan Orion by Terry Sacora of Fairbanks, Alaska took the second place weekly prize.

The Valdez Halibut and Silver Salmon Derbies run through September 3rd at noon. The weigh-in station for the Valdez Fish Derbies is open from Noon to 9pm. Derby tickets for both the salmon and halibut derbies are $10 each and are good for one day of fishing in the derby. A season ticket for either species is $50.
