The Valdez Kids Pink Salmon Derby began in 2008 as a way for the Valdez Fish Derbies volunteer non-profit group to further their mission of promoting Sport Fishing in Valdez. “What better way to encourage and celebrate fishing than to get kids out fishing for pink salmon which are plentiful and easy to catch in Port Valdez”, commented derby marketing coordinator Laurie Prax. This year, the fish were big, taking over all but two spots on the all-time biggest list.
The one-day fishing tournament for kids age 5 to 16 is free and the participants get a free t-shirt and are invited to a free family barbeque. Valdez Fish Derbies also recently purchased Fish Identification signs for the harbor and additional fish carts at the Harbor. Past years, Valdez Fish Derbies has contributed to the purchase of community picnic tables, fish hanging racks and signage at the harbor.
